Abstract

Recent Tesla dashcam systems embed driving-related metadata within video files using the SEI (Supplemental Enhancement Information) structure, enabling detailed reconstruction of vehicle behavior. While this feature enhances the usability of dashcam data for accident analysis, it simultaneously introduces a critical vulnerability. Due to the lack of robust security mechanisms, SEI metadata can be easily extracted and manipulated using publicly available tools and generative AI. This enables intentional falsification of key parameters such as vehicle speed and accelerator input. Such tampering has the potential to distort accident reconstruction results and influence legal liability decisions. This study investigates the technical feasibility of metadata manipulation and presents representative tampering scenarios. To address these risks, validation strategies are proposed, including physical consistency analysis, multi-source data correlation, and anomaly detection based on vehicle dynamics. The study emphasizes that dashcam metadata should not be treated as inherently reliable evidence without systematic verification.
